  • Dissertation: An Efficient Probabilistic Framework for Seismic Risk Analysis of Structural Systems equipped with Linear and Nonlinear Viscous Dampers
  • Advisors: Andrea Dall’Asta, Full Professor at University of Camerino (Camerino, Italy); Enrico Tubaldi, Lecturer at University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, UK).
  • Summary: a probabilistic framework is developed and implemented in Matlab, by combining an advanced simulation approach (Subset Simulation with Markov chain Monte Carlo method) with a stochastic ground motion model. The seismic risk of structures equipped with fluid viscous devices is quantified, by accounting for: dampers degree of nonlinearity; uncertainties on dampers constitutive parameters. The safety margins against the collapse ensured by the current design procedures (according to both European and international seismic codes) are also examined. Results provide useful insights for a more rational and reliable calibration of the amplification (reliability) factors for dampers design.
